OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio to Expand AI Capabilities for Life Sciences

OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a biotechnology software startup developing AI agents for managing drug discovery and clinical research operations.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The four-year-old startup had reportedly raised approximately $20 million by 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC.

Orchestra Bio develops AI agents that assist biotechnology companies with operational tasks, including financial tracking and clinical trial scheduling. OpenAI has identified pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Novo Nordisk among its Rosalind customers.

OpenAI plans to incorporate the startup's technology and employees into Rosalind, its AI model for life sciences research, and Rosalind Workbench, a platform for planning experiments and analyzing research results.

For enterprise developers, the acquisition illustrates growing interest in combining specialized AI models with agents capable of executing workflows across research and business systems. The approach could help biotechnology organizations connect scientific analysis with administrative processes that traditionally require separate software applications.

The deal also reflects increasing competition among AI providers to develop industry-specific platforms rather than relying exclusively on general-purpose conversational assistants. The acquisition is a classic example of how the biggest AI labs (namely OpenAI and Anthropic) are building ever more software for the biggest industries, like pharma.
