Memorial Hermann Uses Epic AI to Draft Patient Test Result Messages

Memorial Hermann Health System, a nonprofit health care system, is using an AI feature built into Epic to help clinicians explain test results to patients. The health system began piloting the technology in December 2025 and has since expanded it across the organization.

Epic’s Art assistant works within the In Basket workflow. When clinicians review laboratory and imaging results, Art generates a draft message that translates medical terminology into patient-friendly language. Clinicians review, edit and personalize the text before sending it.


Memorial Hermann said clinicians using Art-generated drafts have sent more than 55,000 patient messages. Patients receiving those messages generated 32 percent fewer follow-up questions about their results, while clinicians saved an average of nine seconds per result comment.

The implementation keeps clinicians responsible for the final communication rather than allowing AI to communicate autonomously. Memorial Hermann Chief Medical Information Officer Ryan Walsh said the technology is intended to support clinical judgment and the clinician-patient relationship, not replace them.
