GrayMatters Health Applies Machine Learning to Digital Biomarkers for Psychiatry
GrayMatters Health, a mental health technology company developing digital biomarker-based treatments, is highlighting its use of machine learning to develop digital brain biomarkers intended to supplement the symptom reporting and clinical observation traditionally used in psychiatric care.
The company's biomarkers are developed by applying machine learning models that register functional MRI data from deep-brain regions to EEG measurements. Its technology includes an amygdala-based biomarker for PTSD and a reward-system biomarker for depression.
GrayMatters combines those measurements with an interactive simulation that helps patients learn to regulate brain activity associated with their condition. The company sees the same biomarker approach as potentially useful for monitoring patient progress during medication, psychedelic, and psychotherapy treatments.
Its Prism platform is already FDA-cleared as an adjunct treatment for PTSD. GrayMatters also offers a depression protocol and Prism Insights for monitoring patient performance, while researching applications for additional psychiatric disorders.
For health care technology teams, the approach illustrates a different application of AI than generative clinical assistants. Machine learning is being used to translate complex neurological data into measurements that could potentially be incorporated into clinical workflows.
