ICON Partners with Anthropic to Bring Claude Into Clinical Development
ICON, a clinical research organisation, has entered a multi-year collaboration with Anthropic to integrate Claude into clinical development workflows, extending the use of generative AI across the contract research organization's operations.
The companies plan to apply Anthropic's models to workflows involving clinical research and drug development, combining Claude with ICON's clinical data, technology and domain expertise. The effort is intended to automate time-consuming tasks and help clinical teams analyze information and make decisions more efficiently.
ICON will develop four production capabilities within Orbis, ICON’s secure, governed, agentic AI platform, including site intelligence and study planning, predictive intelligence, protocol optimization and ecosystem integration. ICON will deploy Claude across the organisation through a targeted, role-based rollout: Claude Code for developers, Claude for knowledge teams, and Claude Science for scientific and clinical teams for maximum value creation.
ICON said the collaboration will focus on building AI capabilities for regulated clinical environments rather than deploying general-purpose assistants. That distinction is important in drug development, where AI-generated work can affect study operations and must fit established quality, validation and oversight processes.
