Fujitsu, SMBC Group, and SoftBank form alliance to build a Japan health data platform

Fujitsu, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC Group), and SoftBank Corp. have entered a basic agreement to develop a Japan-built health data platform and AI-powered personal health application, the companies announced on May 19.

With more than 30% of Japan's citizens over 65, the country's aging population is driving a surge in healthcare demand and medical costs. Fragmented health data systems and data sovereignty concerns have underscored the need for a secure, interoperable, and domestically developed platform. SoftBank executives also pointed to Japan's "2040 Problem," in which a shrinking working-age population and rising healthcare costs are expected to put growing pressure on younger generations' disposable incomes, potentially worsening the country's declining birthrate.

The alliance aims to curb future healthcare cost growth by approximately 5 trillion yen through operational efficiency and earlier intervention, including reduced redundant diagnostics, fewer duplicated prescriptions, and improved continuity of care, according to MarketScreener.

Under the agreement, the platform will connect institutional medical data with personal health data to power AI agents in a mobile application that supports daily health management, medical consultations, ongoing treatment, and post-treatment follow-up.

Each partner has a defined role. Fujitsu will leverage its healthcare-focused large language models from its "Takane" LLM lineup, its Healthy Living Platform for healthcare data utilization, and its expertise in data governance, security, and sovereign cloud technologies. SoftBank will lead development of domestically operated user applications using sovereign cloud infrastructure and homegrown LLMs, drawing on its existing user base through the PayPay ecosystem, LINE, and Yahoo! JAPAN. SMBC Group will drive adoption and integrate healthcare with financial services, building on its Olive Healthcare service, which launched in March 2026 through an earlier partnership with SoftBank.

The three companies are targeting adoption by 60 million users and 4,000 medical institutions.
