CHAI Releases Responsible AI Guidelines for Medicaid Eligibility Systems
The Coalition for Health AI (CHAI), a coalition driving responsible AI adoption in health sciences, has released a set of best practice guides aimed at supporting responsible use of artificial intelligence in Medicaid eligibility systems. The guidance is intended to help healthcare agencies and technology providers address issues such as fairness, transparency, accountability and oversight when deploying AI tools in public healthcare programs. The recommendations focus on ensuring that AI-driven eligibility decisions remain explainable and aligned with regulatory and ethical standards.
The documents address concerns around bias, data quality and governance, particularly in systems that may affect access to healthcare services for vulnerable populations. The coalition emphasized the importance of human oversight and ongoing evaluation of AI systems used in eligibility determinations. Included in the guide is use case examples, a catalog of community-developed AI interventions mapped to specific points in the workflow, and the multi-phase consensus methodology used to produce the guidance. Both Best Practice Guides (BPGs) are available for download here.
