AI Tool Aims to Detect Early Signs of Gum Disease in Dogs

Waltham Pet Science Institute has developed new artificial intelligence–supported risk assessment tool is being introduced to help detect early signs of periodontal disease in dogs. The system analyzes clinical and behavioral data to identify dogs at risk of developing gum disease, one of the most common health issues in companion animals, and predicts which dogs are most at risk. By providing early warnings, the tool is intended to enable veterinarians and pet owners to take preventive action before the condition progresses.

The institute said, Ā "the network confirms the importance of key risk factors (breed and size, age, head shape, and quality of home dental care), quantifies the probability of a dog having periodontal disease based on the presence of these factors, and shows strong performance in predicting which dogs are at high risk."
Designed to integrate with veterinary workflows, supporting routine checkups and ongoing health monitoring, the goal is to improve diagnosis and treatment planning by identifying risk factors that may not be immediately visible. Veterinary care is increasingly adopting digital tools to improve preventive health outcomes. This advancement could transform how periodontal disease is diagnosed, managed, and prevented.
