Google Cloud, Manipal Hospitals Expand GenAI to Streamline Nurse Handoffs

Google Cloud and Manipal Hospitals are expanding the use of generative AI to automate one of healthcare's most time-consuming clinical workflows, using AI-generated patient summaries to help nurses transfer responsibility between shifts more quickly while reducing the risk of communication errors.

The deployment, described in a Google Cloud blog post, is part of a broader partnership under which one of India's largest hospital networks is using Google Cloud infrastructure, Vertex AI, Gemini models, and other cloud services to modernize both clinical and operational workflows.

Nurse handoffs, in which outgoing nurses brief incoming staff on patient conditions, medications, test results, and treatment plans, are widely recognized as a critical point in patient care. Traditionally, the process relies on extensive manual documentation and verbal communication, both of which can consume significant time and increase the potential for omissions or transcription errors.

Google Cloud said the new system securely gathers patient information from multiple clinical sources and uses generative AI to produce structured handoff summaries that highlight medication changes, laboratory results, vital sign trends, patient concerns, and responses to treatment. Nurses review and validate the summaries before using them during shift changes.

According to Google Cloud, the solution was piloted at a single hospital before being expanded to 23 Manipal Hospitals facilities, where it is now used by more than 5,000 nurses each day. The company said the deployment is expected to expand across the hospital network's 37 hospitals.

Google Cloud reported that the system reduced nurse handoff time from approximately 90 minutes to about 20 minutes, allowing nurses to spend more time on direct patient care.

"The generative AI solution we implemented has yielded impressive returns," Manipal said in a statement. "The 70% reduction in handoff time, from 90 minutes down to 20, frees our nurses to focus more on direct patient needs and care. It also makes the process less vulnerable to errors that can arise from handwritten notes and human fatigue."

The nurse handoff application is one of two major AI systems the organizations highlighted. Manipal Hospitals is also using Google Cloud technologies to support an AI-powered ePharmacy platform that automates prescription processing, provides drug information through Gemini models, and connects clinical systems using Cloud Healthcare API and Apigee API Management. BigQuery, Looker, and Google Kubernetes Engine support analytics, scalability, and infrastructure management.

The project reflects a broader shift in enterprise healthcare AI. Rather than focusing solely on conversational assistants, healthcare providers are increasingly embedding generative AI into operational workflows where it can reduce administrative burdens, improve consistency, and help clinicians spend more time with patients. Nurse handoffs, pharmacy operations, and clinical documentation have emerged as early targets because they involve repetitive tasks built around large volumes of structured and unstructured information.

For Google Cloud, the deployment also illustrates how cloud providers are positioning generative AI as part of enterprise healthcare infrastructure. The emphasis extends beyond model performance to secure data integration, workflow orchestration, and operational scalability, capabilities that hospitals require before AI systems can be deployed across clinical environments.
