Siemens Healthineers, Stryker partner on robotic stroke treatment system

Siemens Healthineers and Stryker said on Wednesday they have formed a partnership to develop a robotic system for neurovascular procedures, including treatment of strokes and aneurysms.

The collaboration brings together Siemens’ expertise in robotics and image-guided therapy with Stryker’s neurovascular technologies. The companies said their goal is to build an integrated system that combines robotics, imaging, and therapeutic devices to simplify workflows for physicians and enable faster, more precise treatment in emergency and elective procedures.

Many neurovascular interventions currently require physicians to coordinate several systems at once, which can add complexity and slow response times. The firms said the planned ecosystem is intended to support quicker decision-making in time-sensitive ischemic strokes and greater accuracy in treating hemorrhagic conditions such as aneurysms.

The initial phase of the partnership will focus on joint design of the system and validation of its clinical value in collaboration with physicians.
Carsten Bertram, head of advanced therapies at Siemens Healthineers, said the partnership aims to create a platform that improves access to timely treatment. Jim Marucci, president of Stryker’s neurovascular division, said the companies are seeking to transform how neurovascular procedures are performed.

Stroke is the world’s second-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of disability in adults, according to the companies.
